Description
The Avenger is a mobile Air Defense platform equipped with a self-propelled surface-to-air missile system. It provides short-range air defense protection for ground units against unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, low-fling aircraft, and helicopters. The Avenger was originally designed for the armed forces of the United States.
Mounted on a heavy High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) chassis, the Avenger is designed with a 360-degree rotating turret mounted with two missile pods, each pod can hold up to four missiles, maximum load is eight missiles. The turret drive is gyro-stabilized and maintains the missile aiming point regardless of vehicle motion.
Service History
Designed as private venture by Boeing in the early 1980s, the Avenger entered service with the U.S. Army in 1988. The first operational deployment of the system occurred during the build up to Operation Desert Storm in 1990. It was also deployed in support of NATO operations in the Bosnian War. Currently, the Avenger is employed by the U.S. Armed Forces and the armies of over ten allied nations.
